The 600 Central project location contained two connected and significantly different style buildings, the major two-story building was territorial style and an adjacent non-stylistic building of early 1950 vintage. DWL/NM accepted the challenge to envision a design concept that would create a new neighborhood mixed-use center to serve the neighborhood with renewed vitality and economic viability. A major component of the concept was the creation of a new interior mini-mall with retail, restaurants, salons and offices. The original exterior visual discontinuity was overcome with a new rhythmic architectural colonnade that wraps the facade from the parking lot on the west side to the parking lot and entry on the east side. The final result is a new economically successful, neighborhood oriented mixed-use center.
